South Australia Embraces Digital Fix for Water Leaks

New tech-backed strategy targets leakage, with utilities facing performance-based compliance and federal funding incentives

South Australia has unveiled a technology-driven plan to tackle water leakage, as part of its 2025 Annual Water Security Update. The initiative marks a shift towards real-time monitoring, turning conventional water systems into digital networks capable of detecting faults as they occur.

The strategy hinges on the deployment of smart meters, pressure sensors and cloud-based platforms that identify leaks promptly. For utilities and local councils, leakage is now treated as a key performance indicator, tied to both compliance obligations and access to national infrastructure funding.

Technology firms are already engaged. Iota is piloting new pressure-monitoring solutions with utilities and councils, while international operator SUEZ is expanding its digital offerings to support early leak detection. The University of South Australia is also involved, providing research support for predictive system modelling.

The effort is aligned with broader national objectives. The proposed National Water Agreement and investment from the National Water Grid Authority offer utilities an opportunity to secure federal support if they meet stringent service metrics. Smaller councils, often lacking digital infrastructure, are receiving training and technical guidance through state partnerships.

Leak-related metrics, including repair times and service disruptions, are now subject to quarterly reporting. The performance data will inform future investment decisions and shape public trust in utility management.

Officials hope the move will serve as a model beyond state borders, with South Australia positioning itself at the forefront of data-led water resource management.
